Charlie Johnson Jr. is now free from this life; he went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2017.

Charlie was born to the union of Charlie Johnson Sr. and Verdell Baugh Johnson on December 20, 1940 in Tchula, Mississippi. As a child, Charlie and his mother relocated to Indianapolis when she met and married Floyd Robert Blackman.

Charlie attended IPS schools and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1960. That same year he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served his county until 1964. As a young man, Charlie met and married Eugenia Sims and to this union was born Victoria R. Johnson. After Charlie departed the Air Force met and married Annie Chandler and to that union they had Darwin L. Johnson. Charlie and Annie raised Kathy and Darwin together, but later divorced.

Charlie enjoyed sports and boxing in the Golden Gloves. He coached football for the Dad’s Club. He rallied everyone together to play while on family trips to McCormick’s Creek. Charlie loved the outdoors and works alongside Annie to plant vegetables and flowers in the gardens.

He committed his life to Christ at an early age. He was a member of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church where he served on the Nurse’s Board: we have the pictures to prove it!

Charlie was employed with the Chrysler Corporation for 33 years after which he retired. He spent some time during his retirement taking care of his mother until her passing.

He leaves to cherish is life children Victoria, Kathy, Darwin, Charles, Jessica, Damon and Kimberly; sisters Gloria (Alvin), Carolyn (Pastor O’Dell), Janice, Joyce, and Marie; brothers Walter Stanley, and Edward; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Fredrick.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11 am at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W. Moore Chapel with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10 am. Burial will follow at Marion National Cemetery at 1 pm. A repass will be held at the funeral home following the burial.
